I am Enough (and so are you!)

by | May 16, 2016 | 20 comments

How often do you treat others better than you treat yourself? It could be you don’t take time to do things that make you happy on a daily basis, or maybe you have a lot of negative self-talk going on upstairs and take on everyone else’s junk.

I know how you feel, I was this person, and I let it get to the point that mentally and physically I was stressed, burned out and generally an unhappy person who was only looking for the little escapes to avoid the life I created.  I would faithfully watch my soap opera, eat junk food and on the weekends I would often have a few drinks to try to forget about my miserableness. TGIF was my mantra!

Deep down I knew I was wasting my time; I didn’t value it or myself because I was taking care of everyone but me. I thought ‘If I don’t do it, no one will’. If I didn’t take care of everyone else’s needs before my own I felt guilt and anxiety and stay up late worrying about things that had not even happened. I was not treating myself well; deep down I didn’t feel I deserved it.

If you resonate with this and want to practice some self-love, I urge you to do one nice thing for yourself every day, if you can do more that’s great!  Not sure what to do?

  • Take a walk in nature and don’t forget to stop and breathe it all in.
  • Soak your feet and give yourself a foot rub.
  • Put on your favorite music and dance like no one’s watching.
  • Treat yourself to a spa day and indulge or a bubble bath with candles and a glass of wine

Whatever it is, treat yourself to some ME time every day!  The catch is you need to do it without guilt. In the beginning you may need to ‘fake it until you make it’, so if those gremlins creep in while you’re loving yourself just tell them, “Thanks for trying to keep me safe but I deserve this, I am worthy of receiving this” and just do it! Or stare in the mirror and say it out loud 10 times. It sounds weird but it really works!

Also watch how you talk to yourself. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself, ‘Would I say this to my friend, my spouse, my child?’ Probably not… be kind and give yourself love, you are human; imperfect and evolving, so embrace it and love it all!

A few months ago I was inspired by a talk on YouTube by Marisa Peer, a motivational speaker.  Marisa often told people to write ‘I am Enough’ on their mirror so they would start believing it.  It sounded a little crazy but I tried it and it actually worked! Each day we all looked in the mirror and were reminded we were enough. This simple phrase made my whole family feel better about their self-worth!

Remember, everyone has these feelings; we are all comparing ourselves with each other. (We should stop that!) It’s completely normal to do it but to avoid the self-sabotage we only need to remind our self how awesome we really are, daily! After a little time you will start feeling worthy so stick to it and let me know how it goes!

A fascinating discussion is definitely worth comment.
I do think that you need to publish more about this issue, it might not be a taboo matter but generally
folks don’t talk about such topics. To the next!
    All the best!!

Thanks for your comment, I agree and will write more on it. In my experience when this type of subject is brought out in the open others don’t feel they are alone in their pain and actually feel some relief. Often they may not even be aware this is the underlying story they are telling themselves. Stay tuned for more!
